Bankoku Shinryokan

2000 Cultural & Educational Facilities

Located in Busena, designated as a key resort development region in Okinawa, this facility aims to blend the themes of “resort and convention integration” and “dialogue between people and nature.” The goal was to create a facility that harmonizes with and integrates into Okinawa’s natural and surrounding environment. The facility is designed to make the most of its unique site, which is surrounded by the sea on three sides, using the land’s elevation differences to create a multi-layered configuration that ensures panoramic views of the ocean. The facility clusters are designed as low-rise structures with red roof tiles reminiscent of traditional Okinawan houses and villages. Between these buildings are scenic ponds, waterfalls, and landscaped areas, which enhance the organic connection between the spaces, clarify functions and movement paths, and create human-centered environments. Traditional Okinawan houses feature deep eaves called “amahaji,” which provide shade from strong sunlight and shelter from rain. Similarly, this facility includes terraces and corridors to block intense sunlight and rain while actively allowing the flow of wind and light.
