Ago-no-Ura Port

2008 Rivers & Coasts

Ago-no-Ura Port is a local port situated in the innermost part of Ago-no-Ura Bay on the eastern side of Zamami Island, primarily used by small local vessels. The port is surrounded by Amuro Island, Aka Island, Geruma Island, and Fukaji Island to the west and south, and Tokashiki Island to the east and south, providing natural shelter from these directions except for a part of the south.

Currently, the port is equipped with a quay (-2.0 m) and a boat ramp. Despite being located in the innermost part of the bay, strong winds and waves during winter or even under normal conditions cause the vessels to sway, hindering docking and navigation. Therefore, we undertook the basic and detailed design of the breakwater.

The standard cross-section of the breakwater was designed as a rubble mound slope with a slope gradient of 1:2. However, a straight 180 m long breakwater would form an “”offshore breakwater,”” making the structure’s length conspicuous. To address this, we designed a breakwater with a gentle curve, bend, and overlap to enhance the aesthetic appeal.
