The Old Russo-Asiatic Bank Yokohama Branch, constructed during the Taisho period, marks history on the site and is preserved and utilized as a wedding venue. While inheriting this history, the design progressed with the theme of the encounter between the East and the West. Additionally, a facade screen enhances the historical streetscape around the area, forming a base for the lower floors. Behind the screen, glass surfaces open up the interior, allowing the quality and activities of the hotel to spill into the streetscape.
This project, featuring the largest high-rise ballroom in the area, includes a pre-function area that protrudes in a zigzag pattern from the exterior wall, ensuring a view axis from the inside towards Yokohama Port and Bay Bridge while also providing an accent to the exterior from the port side.
The significance of continuously working on multiple hotel projects with the same client is substantial. Together, we were able to create an original and finely detailed planning program. This became a rare project where we could experience the true meaning of “design,” constructed through free dialogue and imagination, without being confined to general functions and conventional wisdom.
