Nakijin Cultural Landscape Preservation Plan Development Project
2018 Parks, Greenery & Landscape
Imadomari in Nakijin is a settlement at the foot of the Nakijin Castle, a World Heritage site. It retains a landscape deeply influenced by the feng shui principles of early modern Ryukyu, including fukugi tree-lined estate forests and curved road alignments.
This project aimed to clarify the essential value of the cultural landscape surrounding the fukugi tree-lined settlement of Imadomari in Nakijin. To achieve this, we conducted literature reviews and on-site surveys focusing on the natural and historical characteristics, as well as the annual rituals closely connected to the area’s livelihood and daily life. In the course of developing the plan, we held resident workshops to understand local awareness and organized committees comprising experts and other stakeholders.
