Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University Seaside Faculty Housing, 8 Units

2008 Housing

This facility was developed as a long-term accommodation facility for researchers at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (tentative name).

The site is located on a modest hill facing the west coast of the main island of Okinawa. The design minimized alterations to the existing natural terrain, ensuring views of the sea while arranging eight detached houses. Instead of a uniform layout typical of dormitories, the plan included various types such as single-story, split-level, and two-story units to meet diverse needs. Open deck terraces accessible from the outside were also included to naturally facilitate communication with neighboring units.

For the color scheme, the primary color was chosen to blend in with the surrounding landscape based on the colors of the existing tree trunks. The roofs and walls feature red tiles and Ryukyu limestone, materials commonly used in traditional Okinawan houses, to express a sense of Okinawan identity.
