Okinawa Scientist Village

2015 Housing

Okinawa Scientist Village is a residential facility for researchers at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University and their families. It is located at the entrance of the campus and is considered a key facility that connects the university with the local community. The facility was designed under the concept that it will serve as a hub, with the bustle brought by residents and visitors creating a ripple effect that forms a lively town at the entrance.
The facility comprises a “new village for scientists” with various types of housing, including single-family homes and low-rise and mid-rise apartment buildings, designed to meet the needs of scientists and their families from around the world who choose to live in Okinawa. A notable feature of the facility is the emphasis on creating an environment to incite interactions among residents naturally, demonstrated by residential buildings with courtyards as the main approach and units with alcoves in front of the entrances, which provide numerous opportunities for encounters. The diverse shapes and colors of the openings give the buildings a vibrant appearance similar to that of a cooperative, forming a distinctive village.
