Okinawa Urban Monorail Miebashi Substation

2000 Roads, Bridges & Traffic

This facility supports Yui Rail, the new transportation system for the residents of Okinawa, from behind the scenes. It is located roughly in the middle of the line and supplies stable electricity to the monorail system. As an unmanned facility, it requires easy and reliable remote management capabilities from a central location.

From the windows of the Yui Rail running in front of the building, you can get a glimpse of inside the electrical room through glass louvers. The base of the building is open to the public as a pedestrian space, with greenery and nighttime lighting, considering the urban landscape and aesthetics.

In addition to addressing technical and functional challenges, an important concept was to create a connection between the substation, commonly found closed-off, and passersby, actively fostering engagement with the community.
