Reconstructing Traditional Concepts Passed Down Through the Ages

new LOCAL design

We aimed to create a comfortable space that blends with the relaxed atmosphere of the northern region of Okinawa’s main island. By reconstructing the traditional concepts of “hogo (protection)” and “kusatimui (sacred grove),” which evoke a sense of being enveloped by the exposed beams and rafters found in old residential spaces, we experimented with a new design for an Okinawan bank.

Architecture that Fosters Connections

We envisioned the bank building as a means to foster various connections with the community, enhancing the area’s appeal. The exterior, designed to be easily recognizable from the road, harmonizes with the distant view of the surrounding forest, thereby integrating with the surrounding environment.

Enhancing Functionality through Architectural Form and Design

The diagonally set-back exterior walls create a visually inviting eave and a spacious interior. The layout allows for passage from the entrance through the road and parking lot, connecting the surroundings with the building’s interior. A sloped roof provides a vaulted lobby reminiscent of being surrounded by trees. This design aims to improve functionality by optimizing the slope for solar panel installation and accommodating a generator on the upper floor.
