Shuri Castle Reconstruction Project
2020 Parks, Greenery & Landscape
On October 31, 2019, eight buildings, including the Shuri Castle Seiden (main hall), were destroyed by fire. The national and prefectural governments, along with the Okinawa Churashima Foundation, which is the designated administrator, are working on the restoration of the burnt buildings, the repair of art and crafts, and the gradual public reopening. Our company is involved in several related projects.
For Okinawa Prefecture’s “Basic Policy for the Reconstruction of Shuri Castle” (March 2020) and the “Basic Plan for the Reconstruction of Shuri Castle” (March 2021), we supported the preparation of materials and committee operations for the consideration of prefectural measures such as enhancing the attractiveness of Shurijo Castle Park, promoting historical community development through the “New Suimui Concept,” and the Ryukyu Culture Renaissance. In addition, we examined necessary issues related to park usage and the development of the Nakagusuku Palace site to improve the park’s appeal, both inside (national park area) and outside the castle walls (prefectural park area).
To ensure the proper preservation of the damaged art and craft items, we conducted damage surveys and developed future restoration management plans. These were discussed in a committee of experts to determine future directions and address issues.
