The Busena Terrace

1997 Hotels & Tourism

Located in Busena, designated as a key resort development region in Okinawa, this resort embraces the theme of “coexistence with nature / return to nature.” It was designed with particular consideration for subtropical sunlight and wind, aiming to create a facility that harmonizes with Okinawa’s natural environment.

The building is arranged in a staggered pattern to easily capture the wind, creating “shaded and well-ventilated spaces.” Sashes are minimized to allow the wind to flow through, creating spaces that feel integrated with the outdoors.

Utilizing screen blocks, a traditional Okinawan building material, we created a dramatic interplay of light and shade, managing the intense midday sun and the soft western sunlight. Deep eaves, pergolas, and the creation of shaded areas with many tall trees all contribute to mitigating the strong sunlight.

Capitalizing on the sea, the greatest attraction of Okinawan tourism, the facility features multiple views. Leveraging the natural terrain, the lobby is located on the fourth floor, providing a panoramic view of the sea as soon as one enters the building.
